The meeting was a grueling, dull one. In short, they briefed the captains on the mission: take their meager team to hunt for the freaks and take them out.
-
"We have to?" Leo whined.
He wasn't one for hard work. In fact, he wasn't one for work at all. Or listening, for that matter. Though the task that the others had set for him, his brother, and the psycho was an imposing one. And the others could easily get out of doing anything to help by simply saying "But we can't really do much - you guys are so much better at that stuff."
So, that left him and Bernard and possibly the crazed werewolf to dig an enormous hole beneath the small house that belonged to that healer lady. It flashed across Leo's mind for a moment that the hole may not support house and they may just all be squashed. Like the witch from the Wizard of Oz.
Apparently some big basement was the most important thing.
Maggie inhaled a Reese's Cup and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, wondering if maybe she shouldn't be hoarding the candy. But she couldn't really help herself. It was an issue she had. One of the many.
There were a few others in the kitchen milling about, though the majority had drifted to the basement to possibly help or simply watch the digging. Maggie didn't want to go down. She didn't like fighting, she didn't like work. She liked sitting down on a comfy couch curled up with a bowl of chicken noodle soup and watching TV. But of course, they'd be calling her down in a few hours (or however much time) to strengthen and fortify the room. She was excited to do something useful with herself. She knew she'd been nothing but a burden so far, but just knowing that she had a role of importance - an actual part so important that they'd couldn't have done it so quickly and easily without her - made her feel better about herself.

Leslie sighed. they went through this same thing every time, the boys would always end up pouting about their work. And every time, she had to get them to do it anyway. Those two hardly listened to anyone but her in the first place.
"Yes, Leo. You do. Both of you do," she stated tiredly, turning her attention to her boyfriend and Leo's brother, Bernard. "It'll be a huge help guys. Please?"
--
Dom sat at the table silently, watching his sister try to coax the moron brothers into actually doing their jobs. He hated how much they both clung to her, like flies to honey.
....But... Dom knew that they made her happy... Happier then he'd ever seen her without them. And honestly, seeing her that happy could only make him smile no matter how much he wanted to dislike it.
But anyway, Asa was out and about getting groceries, for the fourth time this week. Dom felt bad, this was her little house that they had all taken over, eight extra hungry mouths to feed and shelter in her little two bedroom shack.

Bernard grinned lazily at Leslie and muttered, "Alright, fine. But, only because you're so cute." He sat down heavily on the uneven floor of the basement, sending up a small, gray cloud of dirt. He focused for a moment and shifted into a grizzly bear. After hauling his rather large, furry backside off the basement floor, he began scratching at the dirt floor with his long claws, making small trenches where they raked the ground.
Noka was on the opposite side of the basement, digging furiously with her large front paws and kicking the extra dirt away with her feet. The dirt clung to her fur in little clumps, like Christmas ornaments on some bizarre tree. At first, she refused to help. She'd much rather sleep than do any real work. However, she was swayed with a rather large bribe. If she and the brothers made substantial progress before they turned in for the night, she would be treated to a large, bloody lump of meat.

Evie wiped her forehead as she picked up another load of dirt and threw it to the side. She loved to help Noka but hated the work in itself because she was really a wimp on the inside. But she was going to tough it out. For the safety of the group, they were going to build a basement for those too lazy to do it themselves.
Wow, that sounds really selfless...
Noka kept kicking dirt into her face, and she put her hand in front of it as a shield as another chunk came flying her way "Hey! Quit it!" she laughed.
Lillith sat at the table watching Leslie and the moron brothers half fight half agree. It was nice to see it turn out this way...usually it ended up with one not as happy as the other.

Leo shoved his finger down his throat and made a gagging sound, totally not in the mood to hear his crush gush over his stupid brother. "Yuuuuuck," Leo grimaced before he turned into a wolf and began to dig a large hole into the huge mound of dirt.
It was sort of comical, actually, seeing Evie attempt to help. For every clump of dirt she threw away, Bernard, Leo and the lunatic each got another foot deeper.
Okay, so maybe Leslie was right about how it was important for him and Bernard to work on this, since no one else seemed to be able to...
He worked for about an hour or two before he got incredibly bored and started to ache from working in the same position for that long.
"Can we stop now? This is big enough, right?" Leo whined after transforming to a human again. The others were still sitting idly by and every once in a while giving the three workhorses directions and commands.

Leslie had watched proudly as the boys, Noka, and even Evie worked. They had done well. and now, they were maybe a good fifteen twenty feet underground, in a huge spacious area. She smiled at them, as both boys transformed back, exhausted. "Yes, yes of course. That was amazing, all of you."
It was about this time when you could hear the upstairs door slam, and Asa's frantic cries for help before she dropped the eggs. Sophia was already sprinting up the stairs to help, Dom had teleported up too. Soon followed by the others, leaving the brothers alone in the basement.

Bernard transformed back to his human self and plopped down on the crude dirt floor. "We did good," he panted. "Only now my back hurts." He laughed a little and let his tongue loll out of his mouth.
--
Noka had scrambled up the stairs on all fours, making an awful racket as she went. "Food! Did you get my meat?" she questioned as she sniffed through the brown paper bags. The numerous smells of different foods and people crowded the room, but she was still able to pick out the pungent, almost copper-like smell of raw meat. It would only be a matter of minutes before she could pinpoint the source of the smell, but she was hungry and wanted her food right then and there. "I'm hungry. Where's my meat?" she growled and stuck her nose in yet another bag.

Asa had returned home and all of the shopping bags were on the table. Maggie considered helping for just a moment before brushing the thought away. After a moment, she heard a yelp behind her and a sort of thunk-cracking sound. Maggie turned around and saw a fallen carton of eggs; she was about to offer help when about four or five people filled up the fit-for-three kitchen.
The crowded kitchen was overwhelming. Within a matter of minutes, the kitchen had gone from being relatively quiet to stuffy, loud, cramped, and filled with the smell of new food. Maggie tried to get up from the table to the kitchen but couldn't force her way out. Instead, she just sat back down at her claimed spot and tilted bags over to look at the treasure inside; she tore a soda off of a six-pack and popped it open, taking a sip. Within a matter of seconds, three other sodas were gone as others snatched at the bubbly treat.
Something furry pushed into Maggie and nearly shoved her off the chair. She shifted the chair over and saw that werewolf Noka thing searching through the bags.
"Watch it," Maggie mumbled under her breath, not really expecting anyone to hear or listen.
This was far too much chaos for one ten-by-ten kitchen.
"Mine too," agreed Leo. "I'm starving now, though."
Little pieces of dirt and dust fell from the unfinished ceiling as people crowded and stormed about the kitchen.
"Sounds dangerous, though. Come on, let's go."
Leo ran up the stairs and when presented with the dilemma of traversing the stuffy chaos or dealing with his rumbling stomach, he turned into a crow and dove into the disaster of food.

Currently, there were about nine other people in the kitchen with Asa. Her tiny ten by ten kitchen, already made smaller by all her cabinets and her kitchen table. This plus ten people equals everyone being shoved and jostled around, banging into things. While Asa was usually a very kind hearted, quiet, slow to anger person, even she had her limits. And like everyone, when her limits are broken, she gets upset. This, was one of those times. "Everybody, quiet!!" She yelled over noise, causing the loud, crazy throng of people in her kitchen to shut up and look to her. "Listen, I know everyone's hungry, and we all want to get food before it's gone, but now is not the time." She paused rubbing her temples. "I will make dinner for everyone, and Noka, you will get your meat, but not this second. Right now, I need you all out so I can put things away and cook. Got it?" After receiving a collective 'Yes Ma'am' Her smile returned, erasing any sign that she had been angry at all. After everyone was out, she sighed, looking to the broken eggs on the floor. "Well," she said with a sigh. "I guess we're not having omelets for dinner tonight."
--
As the group of nine filed out of the kitchen, and into the biggest room to the house, the living room, they began to talk amongst themselves again. Well, most of them anyway. Young Sophia sat to the side, listening to conversations. But unlike everyone else who heard them, Sophia didn't listen to their actual speech. She listened to their thoughts. She was a telepath, she could read minds and project her thoughts into the heads of others.
Right now, she was concerning herself with the thoughts of Leo, the younger of the two shape shifters. Secretly, Sophia had a huge crush on him, though she'd never let him know. So she just listened as he thought of Leslie, his brother's girlfriend, torturing herself. She discreetly slipped a thought of herself into his mind, as she did quite often, trying to get his mind on her. Before switching her focus to Dom, listening to his thoughts...
Dom sat beneath his sister, as she usually opted to sitting on the ceiling rather than the floor. He never understood why she did so, it was a danger to them, if someone were to walk in. Which was why he made sure to stay near her when she did, just to make sure that he could get her down quickly and safely if the need arose. But his sister honestly wasn't the person on Dominique's mind right now. No, he was thinking of another girl, someone he really shouldn't be thinking about, but couldn't keep his mind off. Belle. Belle was Dom's girlfriend about a year ago, and under normal circumstances, she still would be. But this was no normal circumstance. This was a war between he and the other gifteds, and the government. And while this was a quiet war, until recently devoid of media coverage, there were still a few people who were caught in the cross-fire. Belle was one of them. He had loved her, and that was what got her killed. He would never forgive himself for that.
Sophia turned her attention to the others, leaving Dom in his own little world, she didn't feel right intruding on those memories and regrets. So instead, she turned her focus to Bernard, listening to him and Leslie converse.

Noka growled in protest and slunk into the living room. She sat down heavily, creating a rather loud "thud" when her furry backside hit the floor. Head resting between her thick forearms and almost hand-like paws, she watched Asa with disdain and waited impatiently for her food.
--
Bernard sat on the couch with Leslie, smiling like a complete idiot. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her onto his lap. "Comfy, baby?" He grinned and rested his chin on her shoulder. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Sophia sitting alone in the corner of the room. "What a creep. Why is she always just staring at people?" he thought and shivered. Some people just gave him the creeps, and Sophia was definitely one of them. He hugged Leslie a little tighter and directed his gaze at her delicate hands.

She was hot. Leo's eyes were trained relentlessly on Leslie, trailing up and down her body.
Maybe part of it was that Bernard had something he couldn't have. Though he suspected that most of it was that Leslie was hot. His mouth watered slightly and found his gaze moving across the room to the other youngest person in here: that weird girl, Sophia. He'd thought she was a weirdo since he first saw her and generally tried to stay as absolutely far away as possible.
He shook his head and went back to fantasizing about Leslie, pretending that he was Bernard and that he was alone with her...
Couldn't he do that, though?
I wonder...
It sucked that she had had her place established in the kitchen and was forced out. She'd been there, calmly eating her candy, when everyone came in and bombarded her just for a lousy bite to eat. God, they were pigs.
Well, she was too. More than them, probably. She was the one who'd spent all morning in the kitchen eating candy.
She hated feeling like this. She was curled up next to the TV after everyone else had taken all of the good seats, and was watching all of the others laughing and giggling among themselves. She felt horridly left out and like she was far, far out of place here.
All she could cling to was the fact that her power was stronger than some of theirs. It's all she could cling to.

The emotions in the small cramped room was suffocating. Leo's secret crush, Sophia dealing with basically the same thing she was, Bernard's and Leslie's love, Noka's craving for meat... it was like a million clashing symbols at once, trying to fill her ears with horrid vibrations. (She didn't wish she was normal, she wouldnt know what to do with herself is she was normal, but she wished she could turn her power off sometimes.) She could focus on one to calm the storm just a tad...so she decided to pick the least busyest mind: Leslie. There was just a simple sea of love calming her mind, lounder than the drops of worry and spite that fell into it.
She started picking at the skin on her nails, sure to keep her eyes off of Leslie. Sophia was way too obvious and sotra creepy, and she mentaly frowned upen her, not really caring if she read that particular thought. She was bad as concealment.
Sometimes, she would just pick one person to read; it made all the other emotions seem like a whisper even though it made the one she was focusing on louder than all the other combined...but it was less of a calamity to deal with; less of a mess.
She was very gracious to not have a crush on anyone..ever since the rhyming wonder Charile, he had been her first love, she had never felt for another like she has felt for him. she considered herself lucky. Though she missed how having feelings felt, they were a burdon to her emotion-filled mind, and were annoying to cope with along with everyone elses's business.
Smelling the food coming out of the kitchen, she rode on the familiar smooth sea of love Lesie floated on.
