Yes, Yes, it sounds irrational I know but it's on aol news and had me thinking. Basically here's what it is: "MEYRIN, Switzerland (June 29) - The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August. But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists' wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?" Link: news.aol.com/story/_a/critics-fear-collider-could-doom-earth/20080628165609990001----------------------------------------------------------- Personally, I think that if there is any risk of something going wrong the experiment should not be done. Too many people want to take care of their families, do what they've always wanted in life, etc than to have something go wrong! I'm just mad at the fact that those people who built the darn machine just build whatever the hell they want and ignore the fact that billions of people -if something goes wrong- will be effected. Some people are so hideously selfish On another note.....I doubt anything will even happen. I bet the whole thing is something they thought they could make but in the end, probably won't work at all. In my opinion, of course.

Honestly, I think that the scientists aren't that stupid. If they're smart enough to build a machine that can traverse the dimensions, I really don't think that they're dumb enough to put the lives of every single person on earth on the line. I think that if it were possible for it to create a black hole, they wouldn't conduct the experiment simply because, well, they want to live as much as anyone else.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm willing to trust the mad scientists.
Think of it this way:
If they've spent an entire generation on building this thing, most of their lives, why would they just end it? There are much more convenient ways to commit suicide. I think that they, just like every other one of the 6,700,000,000 people in this world, don't want this to go wrong.
I wouldn't consider turning this thing on to be selfish. People get so paranoid about the tiniest things. I really don't think anything is going to happen.

The possibility of micro black holes is actually pretty scary if you think about it. Hopefully the small chance of having a global catastrophe won't end up being true. Despite the risks, I'd like to see what they can find with this machine if it works.

if you read further down on the artical it says that thousands of small black holes pa$$ thru earth each day due to cosmic collisons adn they belive this will be one of them too. hey, just be glad bush isn't involved here. then we'd have something to fear

not only that, but i think they'd need ,oh i don't know, the approval of the ENTIRE PLANET before they made soemthing that could kill us all. and they'd probably nix the USA's vote cos we're never right about anything.

I seriously doubt that a global catastrophe would happen if that thing f-ed up, but the idea of it being able to create new types of matter or mini black holes is very interesting. But can they really make a machine that can do that? But maybe one day humans can invent ships that can go into hyperspace, or laser weaponry or big humanoid mechs to pilot or something. This black hole thing is quite a scientific... breakthrough though

Here's a conversation I had with a girl named Sam about it last night:
She's talking to me on AIM now. She was scared silly.

Wow, that was quite the conversation there. But yeah, that thing started up a few days ago, and I'm fine. I haven't been sucked into a black hole, my head hasn't imploded, there hasn't been a super nuclear explosion, and I haven't spontanesoulsy combusted, so yeah... the end of the world hasn't happened... AGAIN. People freak out too much about all these things that are suppossed to end the world but never do, and it very very slightly annoys me. Really, there's no need to freak out about every single superstious world ending thing or mind blowing scientific thing. Its not really that bad.
